Harvey’s Tales

Nestled in the heart of downtown Geneva, Harvey’s Tales is the kind of indie bookstore you could hang out in all day. Every corner of the store feels intentionally curated for readers. The space is packed with books across just about every genre imaginable, but it also goes beyond books with bookish merchandise like tote bags, bookmarks, notebooks, and other reading accessories scattered throughout the store.
One of the things that stood out most to me was how cozy and lived-in the bookstore feels. There are little nooks everywhere for sitting and reading, and the décor gives the entire store a warm, whimsical atmosphere. Every bit of space is used, and instead of feeling cramped, it feels like a treasure hunt for book lovers. Around every corner there’s another shelf, another display, or another little surprise waiting to be discovered.

The store has both an upstairs and downstairs section, which makes it feel much larger than it first appears from the outside. I especially loved that they have a dedicated banned books room complete with explanations of where and why books were banned. It’s such a thoughtful and engaging feature that adds personality to the store while also celebrating the importance of diverse and challenged literature. It ended up being one of the most memorable parts of my visit.

Another charming feature was the community-focused atmosphere. There was a room set up with a long table for the bookstore’s book club, which made the store feel less like a retail space and more like a gathering place for readers. When I visited, they also had a local ceramic artist selling her work inside the store, likely connected to an art event happening in Geneva that day. It gave the bookstore an even more creative and community-centered vibe. From what I could tell, they seem to regularly support local artists and authors, which is always something I love seeing from independent bookstores.

I also appreciated the café area on the first floor because it added to the cozy “stay awhile” feeling of the bookstore. It’s easy to imagine spending an afternoon browsing shelves with a coffee in hand before settling into one of the reading nooks.
That said, accessibility is one area where the store may be difficult for some visitors. I didn’t notice an accessible way to reach the second floor, and there are also a few steps leading into the bookstore itself. Depending on individual mobility needs, that could make portions of the store hard to access.
One thing I did notice missing was a clearance or discounted books section. For readers who love bargain hunting in bookstores, that may be something you wish the store had. Still, the overall atmosphere and experience more than made up for it for me.
Final Thoughts
Harvey’s Tales is the kind of independent bookstore that reminds you why people love indie bookshops so much. It’s cozy, creative, community-oriented, and packed wall-to-wall with books and bookish charm. Between the banned books room, the inviting reading spaces, the café atmosphere, and the support for local artists and book clubs, it feels like a space designed by people who genuinely love books and readers.
If you’re visiting downtown Geneva and enjoy independent bookstores with personality, this is absolutely worth stopping into, especially if you enjoy slowly wandering shelves and discovering hidden little corners along the way.
