Bury Your Gays is a commentary on the Hollywood tendency to either not explicitly acknowledge a character is gay or to kill off the gay character. Misha Byrne is a screenwriter for a very popular TV show: The Travelers. When the executives want him to kill off the two female leads after revealing they’re in love instead of allowing them to have their happy ending, Misha refuses to do it. Cue insanity, with Misha starting to encounter his horror characters in the flesh. At first the plot is to convince him to change the script, but things take a much darker turn when the characters develop a mind of their own. Misha, along with his boyfriend Zeke and his best friend Tara, must stop the nightmares before they take over the world.

I absolutely loved this book! I flew through reading it. This book has creepy vibes right off the bat, which I enjoyed immensely. I could picture it being a great movie; it was so well-written and detailed.

It was clever to have the scripted parts in the book. When I first saw it, I thought Misha was dreaming in script format, which would’ve been cool, but it ended up being an even better explanation than that! I might need to re-read it to catch more of the foreshadowing now that I know the ending.

I liked the nod to Camp Damascus; I haven’t read it yet but I know of it and it was cool it was included as a documentary here. I’m very happy with the ending; I wasn’t sure if they would be able to survive, but considering the whole commentary on the book was that gay stories don’t need to always end in tragedy, I figured they had to get out of it somehow.

I give Bury Your Gays 5 stars.
